If you’ve been reading up on site promotion tips and techniques, you’ll know there are many ways to improve the traffic you’re getting to your site. Here’s a sequence of activities that includes one technique that’s sometimes overlooked: ensuring that your site is indexed by that powerhouse Google more quickly.

You create great content and post it to your blog, but, if you’re like most bloggers, you experience a delay before your shiny new post makes it onto Google’s search results pages. How long this takes can range from 4 days to 4 weeks or more, depending on the perceived popularity of your site (how many other sites are linking to it), the site’s structure, and your hosting.

You can achieve faster — even near-instant — results by following seven steps to get your website even cozier with Google than it already is.

If a page isn’t in Google’s index, there’s 0% chance that it will receive organic traffic. Indexation, in an over simplified nutshell, is step 2 in Google’s ranking process:

  • Crawling
  • Indexing
  • Ranking

What Is Crawling?

Search engine crawling refers to bots browsing particular pages on the web. If you have a newly launched site, the Google bot will have to find (crawl) your site’s web pages to know of its existence on the web. That said, the bot’s job does not end with crawling. It must index the pages too.

What Is Indexing?

Once a bot has found a page by crawling it, it then has to add the page to the list of other crawled pages belonging to the same category. This process is known as indexing. In a book you will find that the content is systematically arranged by category, word, reference, etc. in the index.

This makes it easier for readers to find exactly what they are looking for in the book. Similarly, search engines have an index of pages categorized in various ways. These pages are not the pages from your website exactly, but a screenshot of the pages as they were seen the last time they were crawled. These screenshots are the cached versions of the pages.

When a user enters a search query in Google search, Google quickly goes through these indexes to judge which pages are appropriate to return in results. With the help of complicated mathematical algorithms, Google is able to decide where in the search results each page should be returned. The accuracy of Google in returning appropriate pages to users’ queries is what makes it such a huge search giant.

Let’s take a look at tactics that can help get your site indexed faster by Google:

Set up Google Search Console

Google Search Console, previously Google Webmaster Tools, gives you in-depth information about your site in regards to how it appears on Search Engine Results Page (SERP). It will also report to you when Googlebot has any issues crawling and indexing your site so you can fix them.

No information will actually show up in the search console until the site is indexed. However, by activating Google services you’re essentially sending them a signal to start indexing your site.

You should also create and submit a sitemap to Google Search Console. A sitemap is simply a rough outline of the site optimized for bots. Most website developers have sitemap generators, but you can also use Google Sitemap Generator. Once you have your sitemap, make sure to submit it to search console.

Sitemap Submission

A sitemap is created to help search engine crawlers to effectively crawl your blog, so make sure you have created a sitemap for your site or your client’s site. If you are using WordPress platform for your website or blog, you can use popular Yoast SEO plugin or any of these sitemap plugins to generate Sitemap file for free.

Next, submit the sitemap to Google/ Bing/ Yahoo/Ask and other popular search engines.

Social Bookmarking Submission

This is another very effective method, though somehow within four hours my website was in the search engines despite the fact that I did not seek social bookmarking submissions.

If you wish to do so however, you can start with following networks for faster indexing of your content:

  • LinkedIn
  • Reddit
  • Pocket
  • Flipboard
  • Facebook (Public share)
  • Twitter

Block Low Quality Pages from Google’s Index

While content is a cornerstone of a high quality website, the wrong content can be your demise. Too many low quality pages can decrease the number of times Google crawls, indexes and ranks your site.

For that reason, we want to periodically “prune” our website’s by removing the garbage pages

Pages that serve no value should be:

  • Set to NOINDEX. When the page still has value to your audience, but not search engines (think thank you pages, paid landing pages, etc).
  • Blocked via crawl through txt file. When an entire set of pages has value to your audience, but not search engines (think archives, press releases).
  • 301 redirected. When the page has no value to your audience or search engines, but has existing traffic or links (think old blog posts with links).
  • Deleted (404). When the page has no value to your audience or search engines, and has no existing traffic or links.

Links are essential in helping bots crawl and index your site.

Bots crawl your website by following links, and one way to make sure your site is indexed quickly is to build out a strong internal linking structure.

You should create links from your older pages to your new pages whenever you add them to your website. Your older pages are likely already indexed, so it’s less important to add links to them.

For example, if you add a new page about a specific service, it’s helpful to add a link to that page from an older, more established page about a related service on your website.

When you link to these new pages, you make them easier for bots to find and crawl. Before long, they’ll be indexed and ready to display in search engine results.

Engage Social Media

Another great way of getting new websites indexed faster on the web is to make use of social media.

Before you even launch your website, you ought to create profiles on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Don’t worry too much if you haven’t done this yet — it’s never too late.

After all, getting a lot of social engagement in the form of retweets and likes is vital to your site’s search engine ranking position.

Once you have your social profiles ready, make sure to add the link to your website to the account info section and then start linking out to new web pages via social media posts. Doing so will boost the crawling rate of the new pages.

Moreover, be actively present on your social media pages by starting engaging conversations and regularly posting niche-related news and updates. As a rule of thumb, the more social buzz you create around your website, the faster you will get your website indexed.

Start Link Building

People view link building, as an SEO tool to increase ranking, but it’s also a good way to get your site indexed faster. Getting links from reputable trusted sites back to your own creates pathways to your site that will help Google crawl faster. Link building isn’t as simple as it used to be.

You want to find trustworthy sites that have authority on Google. Using spammy, untrustworthy sites may help Google index faster, but it may not and it will impact your SEO.

Guest Posting

If your budget is sufficient and you have the necessary time and patience required, prepare 5-10 quality posts and ask your fellow bloggers in your niche for permission to publish your articles on their blogs as a guest author and enjoy the resulting backlinks.

If you are doing this for a client, buy 5-10 quality articles and do the same. Along with backlinks it will drive some traffic to your blog. Try to guest post on relevant popular, high-ranking pages and on regularly updated websites.

Conclusion

Your website needs to be crawled by Google regularly – especially if you’re changing or publishing things regularly. A lot of the steps I’ve highlighted above involve the use of Google Search Console – which is one of the most important tools a webmaster and SEO should have. Understanding the ins and outs of Google Search Console can help you understand how Google interacts with your site and the changes you’re making.

Google’s Index process is one of the most important parts of their whole search algorithm and it pays if you have a basic understanding of this facet. Do you have any questions? Comment it down below and let’s talk!

  2. Hey Ali,

I absolutely agree on Google Search Console. It gives you clear insight on what pages need to be indexed and crawled, therefore you will know what needs to be corrected in order to have a well running website. I like how you mentioned linking your older posts to your new articles, I always wondered what way could i mention my past articles to get more traffic to them, after reading that section I get it clearly now. The social media section is a first for me, I might have to look into setting up a different Facebook and Twitter page that shows content related to my articles. Thank you for this great information, I will implement these tips the next time I write!

I already have google search console set up and use twitter and facebook too.

Reading through your article, I think I need to do some more work with creating backlinks.
I’ve been avoiding this as it does seem complicated.I’m going to try your method of tracking down some sites that would be interested in having me publish as a guest author.

I’m going to follow your link for backlinks too, this is definitely something I need to know more about.

Thanks again, I’ll be coming back for more information often.

I truly appreciate you reaching out to me and asking me to read this awesome article.
I m also in the niche of helping out online marketers to reach the pick of success, so I read your article with great interest.
You can rest assure that you discussed about key points concerning increasing website traffic.
Let me resume the main points:
    1. When we write an article, we must first make sure the article gets indexed.
    2. Putting a link to a news article in an already indexed article can help the new article to be quickly indexed. This is a capital tip for me.
    3. we can acquire backlinks via guest blogging and social media outlets.
    4. you provided a capital link for the sitemap submission.

I think you did a great job. You reinforced my assurance about some of the stuff I already knew and you added to it. I wrote a similar post about website traffic boosting. The post might be of great interest to you. I added a link to the largest SEM & SEO link online.

  5. Hey Ali,

Thanks for putting this article together!

I have a new site and I really need to get my ‘shiny new posts’ indexed right away to build my authority.

These tips are very helpful, and I have already bookmarked this page for later reference.

I do have a question for you. I am using the All-in-One SEO plugin, but have heard good things about Yoast. Do you recommend using Yoast instead? If so, why?

    What are the advantages?

Thanks once again Ali, really appreciate all of your hard work!

    Michael

    1. Hi Michael, I don’t see big differences between Yoast and All-in-One SEO and both of them work well. I don’t recommend you to change your seo plugin every then and now because it may effect your search ranking and I don’t see any reason to move to Yoast if you’re using All-in-SEO at the moment.

      Best,
      Ali

  6. What a coincidence that I wanted to learn more about Google indexing before I read this article!
I have been a little worried lately about some of my newer posts taking too long to be indexed but now that I have read your article I feel like I can change that and have my future posts be indexed much faster. As you mentioned, setting up Google Search Console seems to be a great way to decrease my index times, so I will be doing that today! I’m also going to focus on the linking more posts to each other, especially older ones that have already been indexed to the new ones that have not been indexed.
If I ever have any questions about Google indexing or SEO in general I will be sure to come back to this website.
Thanks a lot for this article!

  7. Very interesting and informative article. There are several tips you pointed out that I will need to implement on my own site such as engaging with social media. While I have just started with Pinterest I will need to start using other social media platforms as well. I will learn to use Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to promote my website as well. Another tip I will learn more information on and eventually implement is guest posting. My sites get indexed rather quickly but I think they are still too new to rank well, what is your opinion? How long should it take to rank first page Google?

    1. Hi Deb, it’s good that you’re getting traffic but to see serious result, you need to be patience and keep adding quality content to your website. It may take 3 to 6 months for a new site to get rank well in Google so if you be patience the result will start coming to your website. )

  8. WOW! These are such great tips! I think it is brilliant suggesting links in your new posts to old posts that are already ranked with Google. I’ve done that a time or two but intend on doing that more! I”m going to adopt many of your other tips too. They seem easy enough and make total sense.
I think I’m going to owe you a dinner after your tips generate even more traffic to my pages. Thank you so much!

  9. Hi there
This is a very useful informative article. I wish I found this before. Why I like this article? It explains in simple terms what seems to be a complicated process most of the time. . Having said that , I noticed that you talked about links in your article, I think it will be helpful as well if you also include links of what you are talking about here like google console and so forth if possible. Also maybe a step by step process of getting a website indexed. Just my wild thoughts. Thanks again for writing this.
